Shared decision-making (SDM) is a collaborative model of treatment decision-making, that is often regarded as a cornerstone of patient centered care. In SDM, the patient and the healthcare professional must jointly review the available treatment options and identify the treatment solution that best aligns with the patient’s preferences and values.
Decision aids, developed to support SDM by presenting treatment options and helping patients formulate and communicate their treatment preferences, are often a central component of SDM in clinical practice.
Little is, however, known about how healthcare professionals and patients understand and experience the use of decision aids in clinical encounters. Particularly, there is a lack of knowledge on the use of decision aids within mental healthcare.
In a randomized design, this study aims to assess the impact of using the decision aid called the Decision Helper™, developed as part of the overall implementation of SDM across all hospitals in the Region of Southern Denmark, in outpatient mental health settings. In addition, the study aims to explore the understanding and experiences in patients and mental healthcare professionals of using the Decision Helper™ as part of their SDM practice.
