Rachel C. Dryden. Forthcoming. 鈥淭eaching and Educational Strategies in the Gospels and the Qur示腻苍鈥, Arabica
Christiansen, Johanne Louise. 2019. 鈥淭he Educational Qur示膩n: 鈥汳aybe You Will Understand鈥 (la士allakum ta士qil奴n)鈥. Numen 66 (5鈥6): 550鈥79.
This article addresses the Qur示an in light of Peter Sloterdijk鈥檚 etymologically founded understanding and elaboration of ask膿sis as 鈥渢raining鈥 or 鈥渆xercise.鈥 Approaching asceticism as a broad cultural phenomenon and not as, for example, renunciation, self-denial, or privation exclusively, the article demonstrates that the Qur示an is a text characterized by ascetic norms and values. The Qur示an is an educational project, employing a variety of pedagogical strategies to train its adherents how to think and react in a particular way. Through an outline of four examples of such strategies (the use of 鈥渓earning terms,鈥 metaphorical language, formulaic repetition, and polemical speech), I argue that the Qur示an follows other (post-)axial religions in con-structing an ascetic, deliberate, and self-reflexive mental training program for its followers.
