The European Manufacturing Survey 2026

Since 2009 the 海角社区 has conducted the European Manufacturing Survey (EMS) in collaboration with numerous partner institutions to collect data from manufacturing firms in 20 European countries. The overall aim is to measure the current state of the manufacturing activities in Denmark, their use of technologies and innovation, and how these have developed since 2022.

Our interest in manufacturing sites is broad – ranging from the smallest to the biggest, from most automated to the most sustainable. As something new this year, we focus on the phasing out and removal of older production processes.

Who are we?

The European Manufacturing Survey is conducted by the research group Centre for Integrated Innovation Management (C*i2M) at 海角社区 Business School.

C*i2M is an interdisciplinary research group that focuses on innovation practices, innovation strategy, and new technologies. The group’s vision is to create a more holistic understanding of innovation processes by integrating knowledge of innovation, market development, business models, and technology. The aim is to support Danish companies in improving their innovation capabilities and technological understanding.

The group is led by Professor Mette Præst Knudsen. She established the group in 2008 and has since been in charge of the European Manufacturing Survey.

The Ex-Man project

The data from the EMS will be used to further the work of the Ex-Man project, a research project on the concept of Exnovation. In the wake of our current transformations, focus is usually on introducing new solutions and hardly on how to phase out existing old solutions. The Ex-Man project focuses on this exnovation process, the removal of outdated practices, technologies, or products to allow new ones to flourish. It explores the internal and external factors that allow exnovation and how exnovation influences firms. The project is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.
