Student centered learning fosters deeper learning and engagement in chemistry.

Meet Christina Wergeberg:
In this presentation, I will present my methods for activating teaching, which I have implemented both in an existing course I took over from a colleague, and in a new course that I have built myself from scratch.
The teaching is based on flipped classroom and exercises that activate and engage the students. Videos are an integrated part of my students鈥 preparation and therefore they can work actively with the material in the lessons. My role is therefore primarily to facilitate their learning process rather than giving lectures.
I will show concrete examples of how this type of student activation has affected the students' motivation, understanding and readiness for exams. The presentation includes evaluations and quotes from the students, which point to increased learning outcomes, curiosity and the experience of a safe learning space 鈥 both in theory teaching and in a laboratory context.
A personal experience is that the teaching method requires less energy in the teaching situation itself, because it is the students who are "on", while I, to a larger extent, guide, ask questions and throw problems back at them.
In conclusion, I will reflect on how this form of teaching significantly reduces the preparation time in the long run once the structure is established.
